Don’t Let One Mistake Define You

When we (inevitably) screw up, it can be easy to let our mistake eclipse everything else.

It can feel like we’re alone. It can seem like you’ve let everyone down. It can be easy to tell yourself that everything was riding on you.

You failed.

Usually, this is not the case.

It’s rare that a serious mistake comes back to truly being one person’s fault.

Even if it did, so what? You’re human like the rest of us. Welcome to the club.

One mistake does not negate everything else you’ve done. It doesn’t erase all of the accomplishments you’ve achieved or everything you have ahead of you.

What truly matters is how you handle the mistake and move forward from it.

I think this quote from George A. Custer sums it up perfectly:

It’s not how many times you get knocked down that count, it’s how many times you get back up.
